Frequently Asked Questions
The Wet Edge Technologies™ philosophy when explaining our products to a potential Wet Edge consumer is to be honest, informative and to never oversell a product. We would rather take the time to educate the consumer on our products so they are satisfied that they are making an informed decision when choosing their pool surface. Let’s face it; the pool finish, the tile, and the deck are what will be seen for years to come. The pool finish needs to be long lasting and aesthetically pleasing to the customer.
A list has been complied of questions that are frequently asked about our products. Please take your time reading through these questions and if we have not answered one to your satisfaction please contact us and we will do our best to answer your inquiry.
How long has Wet Edge Technologies™ been around?
Wet Edge Technologies™ was formed in August of 2005. While Wet Edge Technologies™ is a new company we have over of 30 years of experience in exploration, mining and the processing of materials for the pool industry. Wet Edge Technologies™ sources pebbles from around the world as well as operates mining facilities in South America and New Zealand. Materials are transported to shipping ports on the West and East Coast or shipped in from domestic locations here in the States to be processed at blending plants in Arizona and Mississippi.
During the formation of Wet Edge Technologies™ it was agreed that in order to succeed we would need to improve upon the pool interior products that were already on the market. Just as importantly, we knew that we needed to join forces with quality oriented applicators that shared our desire to provide a quality pool finish for the consumer. With our custom-engineered admixtures, mineral based pigments and exotic naturally colored pebble we believe that we have created a better-quality product and have become “The Next Generation of Pebble Finishes™”.
Are the Wet Edge™ pool finishes easier for the applicator to use?
Applicators that have used our materials have been very impressed with our products. Consistency and sizing of the materials are the basis for a quality pool finish. Pebbles for all the Wet Edge™ products are not just scooped up and put in a bag. Stringent quality control standards are applied at the plant where the materials are cleaned, dried and sized to exact specifications. Meticulous consideration is paid to the precise gradation of the pebbles. This is essential for an applicator to achieve a tight compaction of the pebbles during the application process. The Wet Edge™ Admixture, Pebble Edge™ is added to fortify the cement in our pool mixes. The Pebble Edge™ offers the application crews more workability with our materials. A few more minutes to be able to work the detail in the pool are a great benefit to applying a Wet Edge™ product.
Why should I choose a Pearl Matrix™ pool finish over the competitive pool finishes on the market?
Wet Edge Technologies™ has made improvements to industry standards for pebble pool finishes. Three items set our products apart; mineral based pigments, admixtures to fortify the cement and naturally colored pebbles. All the pebbles are sized to specific gradations to produce a tight compaction. All the Wet Edge™ pool finishes use mineral based pigments that are resistance to UV degradation and fading. The Wet Edge™ admixture, Pebble Edge™ specified in our products and was developed to fortify and enhance the cement that holds the pebbles in place. And lastly, our exotic naturally colored pebbles are sourced from around the world. Many of them are jewelry grade stones and are quite beautiful and vibrant allowing the consumer to travel the world in their own swimming pool.
What is the difference between the Pearl Matrix™ and Satin Matrix™ finishes?
The difference between these two product lines is only the size of the pebbles. The Satin Matrix™ is the smaller version of the Pearl Matrix™. The Satin Matrix™ is considered to have a slightly smoother texture because of the size of the pebbles. The same color combinations are available in both sizes except for the Pearl Matrix™ Red Island. Mother Nature unfortunately, did not create a smaller red pebble in the Satin Matrix™ size.
Is it true that pebble finishes cut the feet?
The pebble finishes do have a texture to them. Sub-standard pebbles, poor compaction and over washing the pebble can lead to a rough surface. A proper application of the pebble finish is not rough to the touch. As with all pool finishes; plaster, color quartz, etc.., if a person plays a sport such as volleyball or basketball for a period of time in the pool they can develop raspberries on their feet and can experience bleeding. We go to a lot of effort to source the smoothest pebble possible. To make certain your concern about this issue is addressed in the best possible way we have created the Primera Stone™ line of products. It looks like pebble but is polished so it is smooth like plaster.
What is the difference between Primera Stone™ and the two pebble finishes Pearl Matrix™ and Satin Matrix™?
The Primera Stone™ and the two pebble finishes Pearl Matrix™ and Satin Matrix™ are made up of different kinds of pebbles, plus they have different application processes. The Pearl Matrix™ and Satin Matrix™ finishes are exposed aggregate finishes which means that the cement cream on the surface is removed during the final application phase. The Pearl Matrix™ and Satin Matrix™ finishes are made up of pebbles derived from quartz stone. On a hardness scale with diamonds being a 10, Quartz pebbles are a 7.5. Quartz pebbles are a very hard stone and do not react with pool chemicals.
Primera Stone™ is a polished pool surface similar to a Terrazzo floor surface. The pebbles in the Primera Stone™ are made up of a very unique marble stone that contains a high percentage of quartz. While not as hard as the quartz stone in the exposed pebble pool finishes, this type of pebble is used because it can be polished smooth. 100% Quartz pebbles would be very difficult, time consuming and expend too many sanding discs to polish.
Is Primera Stone™ Premium Pool Finish a different product compared to a pebble pool surface?
True, some of the pebbles in the Primera Stone™ are not as hard as those in the Pearl Matrix™ and Satin Matrix™ but they are still quite resilient, due to their quartz content. It would take an extreme case of neglect and aggressive chemicals to breakdown these pebbles. Primera Stone™ pools that do show signs of scaling or staining due to bad water chemistry or gross lack of attention can be re-polished. This is another beautiful aspect to the Primera Stone™ pool finish. Primera Stone™ pools can be re-polished periodically over and over again for many years and can look can look even better than a new finish.
Which is a better finish Pearl Matrix™ and Satin Matrix™ or Primera Stone™?
It depends on what you are looking for in a pool surface. Primera Stone™ has the look of pebble with a polished smooth finish. Pearl Matrix™ and Satin Matrix™ pools have a natural stone look that camouflages most inherent pool surface problems. While you can feel the texture they are also extremely durable and long lasting.
Why is a pebble finish considered to be so much better that a plaster or marcite type of pool interior?
The pebbles in Pebble finishes are harder and more resistant to pool chemicals than that of the marble sands used in standard plaster or marcite finish. Secondly, by removing the cement paste on the surface of the pool and exposing only the pebbles nearly eliminates all surface staining and the inherent characteristics that afflict plaster and marcite types of pool finishes. Thirdly, the multi-colored pebbles disperse through out the surface of the pool’s interior giving a much more pleasing look to the pool surface versus a single colored surface. Single colored surfaces seem to show any slight imperfections in the pool surface more readily. While not bullet proof exposed aggregate pebble pools are impressively durable, long lasting and stay looking beautiful.
What is the difference between naturally colored pebbles and colored quartz pebbles?
Colored quartz pebbles are also derived from quartz stone. The difference between the naturally colored pebbles is that the colored quartz pebble has the color coated and then baked onto the pebbles. Naturally colored pebbles are colored by Mother Nature with the color through out the pebble not just on the surface. In the Primera Stone™ product it is important that we use naturally colored stones that will not lose their color when being polished.
How long will my pool finish last?
A pool finish’s life expectancy is different for all parts of the country. A pool finishes life expectancy in Phoenix Arizona, that deals with poor water quality and high chemical use due to the hot summers and a pool finish in San Diego are not the same. Harsh weather conditions and poor water quality play a role in the life expectancy of a pool finish’s life. A key factor in extending its life expectancy is to always properly maintain your pool. If you live in an area with harsh conditions and aggressive water it will be even more important to pay close attention to the needs of the pool.
A warranty is very important to me. Which warranty is the best one?
The best warranty protection for a pool finish is how well the pool is cared for and maintained. Lack of pool cleanliness and poor water chemistry can be cause of its premature demise. Yes, all the Wet Edge™ pool finishes have a warranty against product failure of any of the Wet Edge™ components. We are very confident that the materials that we have specified for our pool finishes meet and/or exceed industry standards. In most cases when we have been called out on a perceived warranty issue it is not caused by inferior components. Pool chemicals abuse, poor water conditions and lack of maintenance are to blame for most pool surface problems. A proper start up during the first 30 days of the pools life and regular maintenance are critical in sustaining an aesthetically pleasing and a long lasting pool finish.
How do I take care of my pool?
The first 28 days of the pools life are considered to be crucial to the long term life and appearance of the pool finish. Even though the pool finish looks and feels hard it is still in the curing stage and is vulnerable to aggressive chemicals and neglect. On our website or through the pool builder you can obtain a recommended pool start up procedure. Good maintenance and pool water chemistry is still important after the 28 day start up.
I want my pool water to look like the color of the ocean water in the Bahamas. Which product should I choose to achieve that same water color?
This is probably one of the hardest questions to answer. There are so many factors that will determine the water color of your pool. The water color in the same pool will vary from morning to afternoon from bright sunny days to overcast cloudy days. Factors that determine the watercolor are unique to the pool setting, design, pool depth and landscaping. For example a brown house right next to a pool or a lot of green foliage around the pool can make the water appear green. The good news is that your pool water color will be unique unto itself. The pictures in our photo gallery and on our water color swatches can offer you a representation of the water color. Pictures on our website may vary from the actual product due to the translation and reproduction limitations of photography and the limitations of viewing photos at website resolutions. Water colors will vary due to viewing photos from different monitors with variable colors and/or resolution schemes. It is highly recommended that you view an actual pool.
Why do you require your applicators to use the Wet Edge™ Admixture, Pebble Edge™?
This is just one more step in creating a better pool finish. Cement is a necessary component in the pool finish; it is what bonds the pebbles together. The patent pending Pebble Edge™ is a custom-engineered high performance pozzolanic mineral and polymer admixture. When added to cement, the Pebble Edge™ chemically reacts with the weak voids in the curing cement and replaces it with more cementitious material creating a denser cement matrix. These chemical reactions in the curing cement mostly occur in the first month, but will continue for years creating a stronger and more durable pool finish.
Why are Mineral (Inorganic) better than organic pigments?
Natural inorganic pigments, derived mainly from mineral sources, have been used as colorants since pre-historic times. Mineral/Inorganic pigments do not react with ultraviolet rays and are resistant to fading. Organic pigments are synthesized from organic materials. Organic pigments are less costly and it takes much less of it to create vibrant colors. The bad part about organic pigments is that they will fade when subjected to ultra violet rays. Since almost all swimming pools are in the sun every day Wet Edge Technologies™ found it important to create a line of mineral based pigments to reduce the fade factor. For more information please see our Pigment Page on the website within the Products section.
My Pool Builder is trying to steer me away from the darker colors like Pearl Matrix Black Pearl and Midnight Ocean. Why is that?
If the pH and the alkalinity in your pool water are allowed to increase over the recommended levels a white filmy substance will appear on the pool surface. This build up is sometimes referred to as scale and will cause the pool surface to be rough and blotchy. Dirt can even get trapped under the scale build up if it is not removed right away. Scale build up can happen on any pool finish, but it is more noticeable on a colored surface because it is a white against a dark surface and therefore it is easier to see. Cements inherent characteristics can also be more prevalent on colored surfaces. Colored pool surfaces if properly maintained will look beautiful.
